Most above-ground pools are plumbed with a skimmer and nothing else. The skimmer and the return both sit high on the wall, often within a few feet of each other — so water gets pulled off the surface, filtered, and pushed straight back in beside where it came from. The bottom two feet of your pool barely move.

A main drain sits flush in the centre of the floor and pulls water from the bottom. Filtered water returns at the top. The whole pool turns over instead of just the surface.

  • Less vacuuming — angle the return correctly and debris gathers toward the centre drain, where the filter picks it up
  • Fewer chemicals — they spread through the entire pool instead of sitting in the top layer
  • Clearer water — the bottom gets filtered, not just the surface
  • Easier to drain — dropping the water for a liner swap or a storm needs no sump pump
  • Pump stays fed — if the water level drops below the skimmer, the drain keeps drawing

This cannot be added later. The drain is set into the base and plumbed beneath the pool before the liner goes in. Retrofitting one means pulling the liner and tearing up the floor. Most installers leave it out because it's extra work on install day — some charge $500 or more to add it. It's included on every package here.

Common questions

How long does an above-ground pool installation take?

It depends on pool size, how level the yard is, and how easily the crew can get equipment to the spot. A flat, open yard goes faster than one that needs grading. Typical timelines are 1-4 days.

Does my yard need to be level first?

The pad the pool sits on has to be level and compacted. That is part of the job. The crew grades the site, and where possible cuts the high side down rather than filling the low side, because fill settles under the weight of the water. A sloped yard is usually good conditions for a semi-inground pool.

Can you install a pool kit I already bought?

Yes. The crew installs homeowner-supplied kits as well as pools bought through a retailer. The kit must be unopened or have a verified parts list. Manufacturer warranties may not apply to a kit we did not supply.

What is a semi-inground pool, and how is it different from above-ground?

A semi-inground pool is set partway into the ground instead of sitting fully on top of it. An above-ground pool sits on a level pad at grade. A full inground pool is buried completely. Semi-inground sits between the two, and it is the usual answer on a sloped yard: the high side gets cut in and the low side stays above grade. Not every pool model is rated to be buried, so the model gets checked before a price goes out.

How long does an above-ground pool last?

Lifespan depends on wall material, water chemistry, and exposure. Liners wear out before frames do and are replaceable, typically after 7-10 years depending on care. Warranty length depends on the package. The Steel Wall pool carries a 30-year limited manufacturer warranty. Both resin packages carry 60 years, and the Full Resin package covers the first 5 years in full. Every install includes a 1-year workmanship warranty. What does an above-ground pool installation cost?

What is a main drain, and why does it matter?

A main drain is a suction port set flush into the centre of the pool floor, plumbed under the pool to the pump. Without one, an above-ground pool circulates only from the surface, because the skimmer and the return are both near the top of the wall. With one, water is drawn from the bottom and returned at the top, so the entire pool circulates. That means less vacuuming, better chemical distribution, and clearer water. It has to be installed before the liner goes in — it cannot be added to an existing pool without pulling the liner and rebuilding the base.

What kind of pools do you not install?

We do not sell or install soft-sided pop-up pools such as Intex or Bestway. We install permanent, hard-walled above-ground and semi-inground pools only.
